A collaborative research process under the WRC called” building social agency and local capacity for sustainable and equitable community resource management: A framework for co-learning, adaptive planning, and participatory mapping of land uses and ecosystem services” was undertaken by UKZN - Centre for Water resources research (CWWR), the South African Environmental Observation Network (SAEON) and Mahlathini (MDF) (2020-2023). The intention was:
<ol>
<li>To enhance the knowledge base towards a shared understanding of the natural resource base, climate variability, community needs and priorities, and governance decision-making and power dynamics, and
</li>
<li>Co-learning for stimulating action, building social agency and improved decision-making and governance outcomes. This was done through development of a transdisciplinary social-ecological GIS support tool which was developed for decision making and management of water and natural resources, and locally defined land uses and development of a framework for supporting innovation and decision making for sustainable resource use management and improved livelihood opportunities.

Two associated Water Research Commission briefs namely - &quot;Collaborative Knowledge Creation and Mediation Strategies for the Dissemination of Water and Soil Conservation Practices and CSA in Smallholder Farming Systems&quot; (2017-2020) and “Dissemination and scaling of a decision support framework for CCA for smallholder farmers in South Africa&quot; (2022-2025), underpin the development of a coherent, inclusive community based climate change adaptation and resource management model for rural communities in South Africa.
This participatory research process has been undertaken in a number of villages across the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Limpopo with the aim to create a participatory process for smallholder farmers to make informed decisions about implementation of climate resilient agricultural practices and water and natural resources management in their localities. The initial project worked on a decision support process for climate resilient practices related to soil and water conservation, gardening, field cropping livestock management and natural resource management towards a locally relevant decision support system, a choice of appropriate, tested practices for homesteads appropriate across a range of bioclimatic regions, options for use at a community-based level for awareness raising and implementation, recommendations for knowledge mediation and a model for community-based monitoring of CSA indicators. The follow-up process builds on this framework to develop further processes and practices and also to disseminate this approach as a working model for CbCCA across a range of stakeholders.

The project’s vision is to build socio-ecological resilience to climate change for the iSimangaliso MPA, and its connected estuarine systems, and the dependent communities that live in and around the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site.
Success for this project would see climate-related impacts and risks understood and reduced for the globally significant marine and estuarine areas of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, through increased effectiveness of conservation management, climate mitigation by restoration and protection of climate-relevant ecosystems, the introduction of ecosystem-based adaptation approaches, and delivery of social benefits and alternative livelihood opportunities.

Quantitative research support to the Conservation Agriculture Smallholder Farmer Innovation Programme, KwaZulu-Natal.
The Maize Trust-funded CA Smallholder Farmer Innovation Programme (SFIP) in South Africa, as conceptualized and implemented through MDF, has pioneered the use of agricultural innovation systems as a methodological approach for the promotion of an appropriate smallholder CA farming system, as well as awareness raising and adaptive research into specific elements of this system.
The programme was initially housed at GrainSA and is presently managed through Asset Research.
MDF has worked with smallholder farmers in CA learning groups, who
implement CA as farmer led trials and expand their implementation into
their whole fields over time. Around 480 smallholders across 43 villages in
KwaZulu-Natal (Bergville, SKZN and Midlands) have been implementing CA
for a period of between one to eight years, because of The Maize Trust SFIP
support. Processes explored are working in village based learning groups and farmer level experimentation to include practices such as use of different CA planters, reduced external input and organic systems, close spacing, intercropping crop rotation, multi-species cover crops, fodder production and supplementation, and livestock integration.

This process inks to the upper uThukela water source stewardship programme and restoration work being undertaken by the Wild Trust in conjunction with the INR to also include veld restoration initiatives alongside alien clearing work.
Mahlathini is to focus on aspects of volumetric water benefit provided for by conservation agriculture (runoff, water productivity) and improved local water access as a pilot for inclusion of these practices into further governance, stewardship and climate adaptation processes in the region.
